If Monday had a Facebook page, it would have zero friends.
None. Not a one. At least that's how I usually feel when that alarm goes off at 6:25 am. When I drag myself out of bed in the morning, especially when there's a bit of a nip in the air, I just want to throw on something that's easy, comfortable, and still looks good. Is that too much to ask? Now, I think I have my go-to outfit. This cardigan's simple lines scream design, and open dramatic neckline easily makes even a tee-shirt and jeans look glam. So pinch me... I found a piece that's functional, comfy and full of style, and it's supporting local. I work with pretty things, every day. Mostly. Well, at least that's the idea of it all. But in reality, day in and day out, boutique work isn't all that glamorous. It's 97% work: ordering, straightening, inventorying, vacuuming, staffing, paying artists, insurance, security, taxes, business association fees, mailing, building a website, displaying, marketing and oh, there's also selling. Yeah, without making the rent, there isn't a business.

Then there's the 3%. That's the best part of it all. Meaning all the the glam, fun stuff, like creating sparkly things, and working with amazing designers, photographers and talent. Could it be possible that a couple more Portland, Oregon designers are featured on the new season of Project Runway?

Local Portland fashion writer, Eden Dawn, breaks the news that the season 9 will initially feature two other Portland designers, Bryce Black and Becky Ross. Eden's Portland Monthly blog shows pics as the reality design show hosted a outdoor design challenge with a public runway show in New York's Battery Park with celebrity guest judge Kim Kardashian. Notably missing from challenge pics and extras of the judge's panel on this day is Tim Gunn. Is the beloved even-keeled mentor still on the show?

While we twiddle our thumbs waiting for the next season of Project Runway to air on July 28 on the Lifetime Channel, the Season 7 winner, Seth Aaron Henderson decides to head up a "Celebrate Indie Designers" for Independence Day.

Yes, he does it again! Seth Aaron Henderson just knows how to effortlessly put on a runway show! This time it's his Fall ready-to-wear collection, debuting at LA Fashion Week, Project Ethos show on March 12, 2011. What did we see? A bold splash of color, dramatic lines, and that little something extra that's a bit daring and edgy without being overdone. No frilly stuff here. Nothing too flowing bohemian chic, that's for sure. Seth Aaron gives us bold, strong collection with a pop of bright cherry red coupled with and his classic touch of menswear oversized hounds-tooth in a fitted, feminine silhouette. This year he paired his designs with Ms. Wood leather and wood shoes for a total look that really works.
And what a show! Takes us back to his finale collection at Bryant Park, with his Russian-inspired winning collection of Season 7 of Project Runway. Bright lights. Big City. Portland, Oregon just received another shout out in the international fashion community with Gretchen Jones' controversial win in the hit show Project Runway, Season 8. The popular reality show hosted by Heidi Klum pits contestants against each other as they design and sew their hearts out each episode. And this season 8 wasn't without controversy.

The producers edited Gretchen as headstrong and opinionated especially in relation to her fellow milder-mannered finalists, Mondo and Andy. In retrospect, Mondo was seen as the quirky fan favorite. His whimsical, colorful designs stood out and personal HIV admission melted the hearts of the viewers. Andy's strong Hawaii ties were seen in his strong resort pieces. Season 8 shows moments of upheaval, dissent, and ranting video blogs. "The judges must be a bunch of crack smokers," reiterated Tim Gunn in his now famous video blog. Gunn even vocally criticized the show's producers. His scathing video splashed over the internet and then just as quickly disappeared. And then there's Tim Gunn's famous diatribe siting Gretchen as manipulating certainly didn't help her fan base.

And then Gretchen Jones takes home the crown. The assertive, hungry Portland designer comes out on top after all.
Had the producers swayed us into thinking it couldn't be? Were we to feel duped? Mondo was the forerunner, he was a nose ahead at the finish.

It was if the producers embraced Mondo, wooed him, kissed him and then rolled over in bed to hook up with Gretchen. And she got the china to boot.

At the final critical moment, the judges decided to love Gretchen's styling and sustainable easy pieces, just as they did at they beginning of the show. Michael and Nina's influence swayed Heidi in the end.

Please no tears for sweet Mondo. His genius won't be deterred, he is already a winner in his own right.
Talk about rallying a nation of believers. His personality and talent will take him father than any title can.

Thinking about it, there were hundreds of hours of footage we didn't see. Word is Tim Gunn and Gretchen made up afterwards and as Gretchen says in the after-show interview, "I'm not a bitch, I just play one on TV." Yes, we all must remember what makes for great watching. The producers know this all too well and thus, pure snarky drama is born.

It's all about the editing.

Characters, personalities, saints and villains are molded and sculpted right before our eyes. It keeps us tuning in and rooting for our team, episode after episode.

It's r e a l i t y t e l e v i s i o n !

Gretchen sent pieces down the runway that would immediately sell right off the racks. She didn't dilute the runway with fancy masks, elaborate head pieces or zaniness. Just wearable street fashion. Even the jewelry was cool but not over the top. Flowing fabrics, muted colors, nothing over the top. It will sell in the pages of Marie Claire in an instant.

I got a bit of a different impression of Gretchen when I met her in person. As a guest at Gretchen's finale party, I met a very fun, genuine person, whose talent is strong. I'm so happy for her. Portland loves its savvy, homegrown indie designers.
I wish you the best! Thank you so much for allowing me to share your finale evening with you.
Not only that, Gretchen was kind enough to send me her silk design for my boutique. Her line has a flowey feel that actually will fit more customers than super fitted designs.

Seth Aaron Henderson was one of the show's most gracious winners (Season 7) and he lives just over the bridge from Portland, Oregon in Vancouver, WA, and he sells his designs at my boutique.

Season 7 also featured another Portland local, Janeane Marie Ceccanti, that did not win. Two seasons before that, season 5, was won by Leanne Marshall of Portland, Oregon.

A few days ago I walked along the edge of the lake and was treated to the crunch and rustle of leaves with each step I made. The acoustics of this season are different and all sounds, no matter how hushed, are as crisp as autumn air.

Gosh, I love it when my friends and customers send me their pics of themselves wearing apparel or jewelry from my boutique. These images, to me, are reminiscent of a glossy Ralph Lauren glossy photo spread, only better. The girls came in and purchased lots that day, including these Suzabelle coats. The photos were taken on their working horse ranch, just outside of Portland.

Hmm, when I stop for a moment and think about all the designers that are featured in my teeny, tiny boutique, I pause on Suzabelle, who season after season, consistently comes out with the most gorgeous, fashion-forward coats, jackets, dresses, tops and skirts. She just focuses on the details that make the design special. And her designs are always unique and her seams are flawless.

Even at the finale party Project Runway winner, Seth Aaron Henderson and Tina, his wife were singing the praises of Mila's collection. They both loved it. There is a similar sense of chicness and in-your-face style to both collections. But why compare them? Because despite how it shook out in the judging, Tom and Lorenzo, bloggers for Project Runway feel that Mila was a very close second to Seth Aaron Henderson's win. Both collections were very strong and very cohesive.

The details on this black and white coat were provided to me by the designer, Mila Hermanovski, herself. Just a note: the final three designers, Seth Aaron, Mila and Emilio were each allowed $9,000 for their ten looks, so this is a quality piece made from nice materials. Mila says, "This gorgeous wool jacket can fit anyone from a 2-6. It comes in a bit at the hip/hem. The coat is VERY finished...100% wool with REAL patent leather trim/cuffs, fully lined, working pockets. Hidden jumbo snap closure."

Judge Michael Kors commented that Mila "killed the girl dancing the Frug in a cage and made her oh-so-modern and desirable." Now you can capture the best of the 60s with this sassy striped ensemble from Mila's collection.

Seth Aaron waltzed out, thanked his family, and announced his collection was an homage to 1940s German and Russian military looks. What he designed and sent down the runway was bold and strong: exaggerated plaids, bold yellow and patent leather, confidently bested by houndstooth, and plaids tucked, folded, quilted, layered and belted into a cohesive collection of statement dresses, coats, and skinny pants. Today was the premier day for the Project Runway designers. 10 designers were included as not to prematurely spoil the suspense of the show. So yes, some were decoys. We still do not know who took the honors as the Project Runway Season 7 winner.
Heidi Klum, joined by fellow judges Nina Garcia, Michael Kors and guest judge Faith Hill, warned the Bryant Park audience at The Tent on Friday that they would be in for a very long show with 10 contestants each showing their collection. While there seemed to be a peculiar agreement amongst those 10 on certain design themes — peaked shoulders, pockets with volume, turquoise colorblocking — some inevitably fared better than others. Seth Aaron Henderson's collection was bright, primary colors and dynamic lines.

In my opinion, because I personally see his and touch Seth's designs every day at my boutique, a n d see his designs on my customers... his designs are original and not too girlie. Lots of Bettie Page, Marilyn and rockabilly influences, totally feminine silhouettes without all the girlie frill, yet still full of original details.

And I hope he stays on the show for a while, because he's really a sweetheart.

Thanks to everyone who supports small businesses. We really really appreciate your business, lots more than the mall does...

Yay, a new year is here. So many friends and family members were hit with layoffs and health issues in 2009, not to mention the strife and dissension that goes hand-in-hand with trying to keep one step ahead the fire.

So with that, now is the time make new resolves, and step back to take a little time for renewal.

One of my many resolutions is to dress how I want to without regard of the occasion. My morning French-press coffee and cereal will start with Edith Piaf and Francoise Hardy. Work attire will include opera length pearls, layers and layers of jet, and exaggerated crystal lariats, just a bit over the top. The boutique will reflect my love of the Moulin Rouge, speakeasies, and the likes of 1920s secret gin joints filled with offbeat characters. The apparel will be a fabulous, handmade and original.

I vow to actively explore Portland's underbelly to uncover glorious finds of vintage jewelry, old beads, original Italian Murano glass, and shoe clips and painstakingly remake each piece with my own signature and exotic gemstones.

And I vow to show up at the PTA spaghetti feed wearing beads, sequins, and feathers. Yes, soon I will be that eccentric "lay-dee" with the pearls and fancy cloak, all just a bit before my nephews starting me their crazy Aunt Anne. And I want to do it all with a playful smile. This month’s Vogue Germany goes all the way back to the 1920s with “Indochine.” Fashion editor Christine Arp and photographer Alexi Lubomirski take the moment and capture my dream.

My daily style will reflect more cinematic drama, intrigue and allure... all before pouring my bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios.

Hope your new decade is filled with celebration, art and adornment.

For me, the up and coming fashion designers are the most fun to celebrate. Why? Because it's more fun to celebrate the true underdog, emerging designers with hidden, true talent that aren't already overexposed in the press. They're in a few select boutiques, possibly have participated in runway shows, but on the greater fashion scene are still considered secrets. Well, maybe until now.

Seth Aaron Henderson is one of those underdog emerging designers that I have in my boutique. He designs fashion with Bettie Page, Marilyn and rockabilly influences, with feminine silhouettes that are full of custom details. But now, he's not much of a secret anymore, since the word is out that he is in the newest season of Project Runway.

Seth Aaron is cast in Project Runway's season 7, airing a few weeks. What makes him stand out? He is one of the designers at the boutique who personally handcrafts each coat or dress he makes. And often he creates the patterns himself, which nowadays is a truly a lost art. Plus he has a heart of gold, so I hope the show's producers portray his genuine sweet side as well as his zany side in the editing process. He lives just over the bridge in Vancouver, just minutes from Portland, OR, (amazingly, there is another cast member from Portland) so the Project Runway lists his residence as Vancouver, WA and his birthplace as San Diego. But since he's been one of my best loved designers since the day I opened my doors, he's all Portland to us. Best wishes Seth!

The fabulous Jillian, the zest behind the fabulous FUSE Portland Fashion Synergy.

The first international FUSE Portand Fashion Synergy Show took place at the Portland Art Museum Friday, September 25, 2009.

May Tee founder of Portland Fashion Synergy (PDXFS) and Jillian Rabe, event coordinator, along with their fabulous team put on a show that was fun and well-paced with a sense of whimsy, awe and glamour. Portland-based designers included Emily Katz, MAYTEE, and the men’s line Defyance; and a special collaborative collection will be presented by local designers Adam Andreas, Hillary Day, Janeane Marie, Barbara Seipp, Emily Sunnell, Christa Taylor, Heather Treadway and others.

Featured Chinese designers included Cathaya, Cui Wei and Chong Jian, one of China’s most famous designers.

(PDXFS) collaborates with apparel designers, manufacturers, retailers, educational institutions, students, local businesses, government organizations, the media and the general public to create and support a thriving and sustainable apparel industry in Portland, Oregon. Together, we can establish Portland as a fashion capital with a unique design vision and attitude.

Sweet encaustic paintings by Susan Najarian

I'm back from my buying trip and am just so giddy about hanging these sweet encaustic paintings by Seattle artist, Susan Najarian. Susan's paintings are created by using many thin layers of wax that attract and refract light. Encaustic is from the ancient Greek word that means to heat. The medium consists of beeswax melted with a small amount of resin to impart hardness.

Using photography as her base, Susan's photos are digitally manipulated and the images then transferred to a wood frame covered in encaustic wax. Layers of wax then suspend the photograph, altering the appearance to produce the cloud like feeling of the medium. The imagery appears to float. It's an early Tuesday morning and Betsy Cross is in her artist's workspace creating her eye-catching line of Betsy & Iya jewelry.

Betsy is just one of the hard-working, talented independent artists I love to showcase in my boutique.

Whoo-hoo, the new Crave Portland book is just out...

So the best part of my job is meeting the artists, watching them in their studios, and buying beautiful new pieces for my boutique. This morning, bright and early, I drove over to meet the artist, Betsy Cross in her artist's workspace in NW Portland. She's the darling genius behind Betsy & Iya jewelry, and I happened to see her last night as we both were invited to a CRAVE book launch party that showcases women in biz, "The Urban Gal's Manifesto: The Ultimate Guide to the Places Women Crave in Portland, including more than 100 women you need to know." Long title, I know...but I bet they could sell more books that way. :) We both giggled about how many books we each have, 50 copies! What on earth are we going to do with 50 copies each? Anyhow, I was delighted to see that Betsy was at the book launch party and we planned on meeting today so I could pick out new pieces.

And here are a few of the new pieces I choose:

These fans were used by the graceful woman in times when staying dry was a feat of beauty. They remind me of the fans used by wise women so perfectly dancing to Cuban music in Mexico City.

What? Folks are upset because my published prices are too low. Never have I heard of such a thing.

I just got off the phone with the designer, Suzie Jaberg of the Suzabelle line...
It seems other boutiques that sell Suzabelle's Collection complained that I marked the prices down too much, and asked the designer, Suzie, to call me and have me raise my prices online, so their own published prices don't seem so high. What the...?
So Suzie, the designer is asking me to raise my online prices, with a disclaimer.

Sheesh, I pay the designer the same amount for her pieces, I'm just taking the price cut out of what I would make. I thought that's my prerogative as a store owner...it's my store I'd like to price my merchandise the way I want. As long as I pay my artists and designers to the agreed upon prices, I should be able to offer my customers a deal.

But since Suzie called me, and asked nicely, so her other boutiques don't do something silly like drop her as an account or get extra pissy, Suzie and I BOTH agreed I could say this..."For even lower prices, call Anne at 503.452.3711 or come in the boutique in SW Portland and I'll give you the lowest prices on Suzabelle..."

Besides, to futher my point, all of Suzie's designs are so adorable, I want the world to enjoy them!

Right now, I'm sipping the closest thing to God in a cup and ruminating about what makes a store successful. Thank goodness my rent is manageable...that's all I can say.

I've just learned that two of my favorite Portland boutiques are no longer in business or closing for one reason or another. Mimi & Lena, a Portland staple, has recently closed its 19th and NE Broadway store and Olio United is closing its brick & mortar store on SW Water Street down by Clark Lewis restaurant and OMSI.

Owning a small biz is tough as anyone who has done it can attest. In today's economic climate, it's even more difficult. It's hard work daily, but so rewarding. My boutique is teeny, tiny, so therefore my rent is less. Do I wish I had a larger boutique? Sure I do, but after a good, long look at things, I'm happy with what I have. Maybe tiny is good. After a lot of reflection, and since my square footage is so small, I've decided to focus on my passion, carrying special accessories, and jewelry, and one-of-kind statement pieces. Nowadays, with bead stores mushrooming up on every corner like NW coffee shops, everyone calls herself a jewelry designer. But to me, jewelry is more than beading. So I'm focusing my attention on different, one-of-kind forged metal pieces, and elaborate gemstone statements.

It is one of the few lines I have that is produced over seas. Suzie personally delivers her pieces to me, and says her goal in production is to provide great living wages and work environments for women in smaller, less-develeped countries. Their production manager visits the manufacturers weekly to ensure everything is running smoothly and that all aspects of development are socially responsible. She uses natural fiber materials and dyes whenever possible. Truly, her designs are so distinctive hot and unique. Every piece is a treasure!

Top Ten Tips To Sell Your Art
Fraser Kee Scott, one of my Twitter and MySpace friends, who owns an amazing gallery (http://www.agallery.co.uk/) in England, says this about selling your art...

The most important things for survival as an emerging artist, in order of importance, are:

1. Make drop dead stunning art. Make art that just stops people in their tracks. The competition is T O U G H. To survive your work has to be the best of the best of the best. The definition for a good work of art is: Technical expertise itself adequate to produce an emotional impact. So make sure you have exceptional technique, but that you do not concentrate so much on technique that you do not get your comunication out.

2. Be ethical. Being ethical means doing things which aid you, and the people and the world around you, to survive. Ethics is a personal thing. When a person does things which they themselves, deep down, know are not helpful to their own and others survival, they then cut back their own success. You are basically good and you only allow yourself success if you feel you deserve it. If you want to succeed in anything, you have to be ethical.

3. Do not have suppressive people around you. Do not accept ANY invalidative criticism. Artists are creative by definition. There are people out there who are currently destructive. They like to pick on artists as targets to pretend to be friendly to, but actually to pick at, upset and destroy. There are two types of criticism: Constructive Criticism - where the person suggests a better way to do something & Invalidative Criticism - where the person just says something is not good. Be aware in any criticism that there are such things as personal taste, contemporary standards and even envy or jealosy. Criticism is the biggest reason an artist stops making art. Surround yourself with supportive people with social personalities.

4. PROMOTE. If you have No.1, 2 & 3 done then this step will be EASY. Promoting exceptional art by ethical artists who do not have suppressive people around is a dream. If you are having a hard time with promotion have a look over 1,2 & 3 and work on them a little, then promote again. But, there is a law in the universe and it is: Outflow = Inflow - the more you communicate to the world about your art, the more attention and money you will get back. In the arts the Press is God - so make sure you are always communicating to the art, luxury lifestyle and mass press. But also make sure you are always communicating to art buyers or galleries and your past buyers. Ideally you will have a gallery do that for you, but the point is that you have to promote if you want to survive and the key is - number of people reached and number of times reached.

Top Ten Tips To Sell Your Art!!!!!!!

1. Find out what is needed and wanted. Like, if you find out that people want pretty pictures of houses with snow on the roof and you DON'T DO THAT, then I am not saying compromise yourself by doing that, but a fatal mistake many artists make is not to consider in any way what their potential clients need and want. Like, it can be a tiny consideration, like the client wants it framed in black or the clients in a certain area only buy certain size works, whatever, survey the people who are your potential clients and find out what is needed and wanted.

2. Present your work as if it has value. More than any other object Art is all about percieved value. A drawing by Picasso is worth $50,000 and a drawing by Mr. Pisacco is worth a cup of tea in the diner if he gets lucky. So spend a lot of time considering how you present your work, really make it look like it's worth a lot. It doesn't have to cost a lot to do this, mainly care and attention to detail.

3. Keep a very detailed log of anyone who has bought from you before, keep this seperate from anyone who has been interested in buying a work before, keep that seperate from anyone who has viewed your work before. Communicate to the lists differently - give very special care and personal attention of the first, have some personal aspects to your communication with the second, be more 'mass mail' to the third.

4. OUTFLOW. Outflow is things going out from you. Like handing out leaflets is outflow, sending out promo, making phone calls, whatever. There is a law in life that is OUTFLOW = INFLOW. Just keep outflowing, it may seem you are not having an effect, then the effect comes 6 weeks later, you might hand out a thousand leaflets in one place and someone walks in from another place, keep it up, it works.

5. Devote some time to promoting yourself. One of the most successful artists I show in my gallery spends minimum 20% of his time promoting himself. Not because he enjoys it, but it keeps him alive. Sure, he has galleries to show his work and promote him, but he has to manage them. Basically it is not enough just to make the best work in the world, you also have to get that work to the world.

6. Start off with prices low and build up. Some people take the compilments to their head and think they should get high prices straight out of college. This can be a fatal mistake. People are wary of buying art, it can be a financial risk. Most people buy art because they love it, but are wary of being burned. Your buying clients are your best form of advertising. If someone has paid bucks for your art and they love it when they have friends round for dinner the first thing they are going to show them is your art, they will be proud of it, they will 'sell it' to their friends, who, trusting their buddy and seeing the work has value as it has been bought by their friend, are likely to want one themselves. So get your art out there. Sell it for whatever you will be satisfied with, make sure you survive, but at the start, until you are selling regularly and well, sell as low as you can possibly afford, that way you build up a clientel. The goal should be to have a waiting list who battle over the works (hence driving the prices up)

7. Be ethical. You are a powerful being, more powerful than you imagine. One of the reasons you do not use all your power is that you are basically good and when a person sees themself doing something with their power they wish they didn't do, they cut back their power, to protect other things around them. So stay ethical, because then you allow yourself to be powerful (which includes selling lots of art). Also, if you find that you just are not selling, perhaps your work is better than a friend who just can't keep hold of his work and it just doesn't add up... Well check your ethics. Is there someone you ripped off? Did you sell a big work and should have paid your bills but you spend the money on loose women and liquor (lol)? If so you need to sort these things out somehow. Maybe you don't have the money to pay the bill now (you spent all that and can't remember half of what you spent it on!) - well, just get in communication with the person you owe and sort some arrangement out, confront it, pay them a little towards it, whatever - keep yourself ethical and sort out any unethical stuff from your past. This is vital to success.

8. Remember what you did that was successful and do that; remember what you did that wasn't successful and don't do that. Look at periods when you did really well, work out why and let that inform your actions, it worked, it will work again. if you are doing really good, then take a sharp turn for the worse, figure out what caused it and stop doing that. You don't need to reinvent the wheel everytime- with me I know that doing Art fairs is successful, so I do as many as I can. That type of thing.

9. Finish what you start. If you do not complete an action you start you can leave a lot of your attention on what you did not complete. That can tie things up. Incomplete actions tend to build up and form mountains. These backlogs destroy the possibility of future production. When you see your production going into apathy know you have gone the route of 'not done's' and 'half dones' and handle them.

10. Be true to you self. Work out honestly and earnestly your goals as an artist (these can be as wild and high as you like). Then work out realistically how you are going to achieve them. Enthuse yourself about them. Don't let anything or anyone get in your way or discourage you or tell you you can't have what you aim for.

How I Landed a Great Job in this Lousy Economy

I recently found a great job in a dream company during the worst economic times since the Great Depression. How did I do it? I spent at least an hour every day for two years doing all of the things I have listed below. These are my Cliff Notes for landing your dream job, or at least a job that is a stepping stone to your dream job. This is a really long blog, and I'm sure most of you won't read it all. But you at least have to scroll down and read the last section about first impressions!

There is so much more to say, but I think I'll just put it in a book and let you download it if you want it.

Find a Business Networking Group

A business networking group is a place where you can go and meet people from all kinds of industries who may or may not be able to connect you to someone who can help you get a job. I attended a networking group called "The Breakfast Club" every other Tuesday morning for a year, and made some fantastic connections.

Update Your Resume
Customize Your Resume Every Time

I know it sounds like overkill, but the only way you're going to get a job in this economy is if your skill set is an exact match to what the hiring manager is looking for. If the job description says they're looking for a one-legged pirate who can knit, by God you'd better be a one-legged pirate with lots of hand-knitted sweaters in your portfolio!

Have Someone Review Your Resume
Give your resume to someone in your industry and have them give you constructive criticism. I probably have 10 different versions of my resume thanks to all of the suggestions I got.

Know Which Industries are Hiring
I come from the land of high tech, but high tech isn't doing so well these days, so I had to broaden my search scope into other industries. Let's brainstorm here for a minute and come up with a few companies and industries that are thriving in this economic downturn:

* NetFlix. People are staying home more, going out less. NetFlix is hiring.
* Alternative energy. We have a company here in Hillsboro called SolarWorld. They are the largest solar cell manufacturer in the country. They can't find enough qualified people for all of their job openings! Vestas, the turbine wind company from Denmark is moving its U.S. headquarters to Portland.

* Certain media companies. The company I work for creates, supports and manages interactive TV applications that allow you to interact with applications on your TV. In the UK you can even buy stuff from QVC with your remote.

Be willing to change industries.

Join an Industry Group
I am a member of OEN (Oregon Entrepreneurs Network) and SAO (Software Association of Oregon). These groups hold business and social functions where you can meet all kinds of people, and get introduced to companies you've never heard of. Find an organization in your area and join!

Subscribe to the Online Business Journals
I subscribe to the headlines for three business journals: Portland, Puget Sound and Silicon Valley. Every day I get little snippets in my Inbox telling me which companies are laying people off, which new companies just got more funding, etc. This is the way you track where the jobs are.

Create a Profile on LinkedIn
Become a Master Networker on LinkedIn
I have been online since the word was coined. Seriously. If there is a new business or social networking site in town I check it out. LinkedIn is a business networking site that allows you to keep in touch with current co-workers, ex co-workers, friends and recruiters.

Create a profile that showcases your job experience.

Start looking for people you know to connect to.

Ask for Recommendations
Ask anyone you've ever worked with to write a recommendation for you on LinkedIn. These are public references that potential employers can view. The more recommendations you have on LinkedIn the better.

Update Your Status

Change your status on LinkedIn at least once a week. Why? Because it keeps your name showing up at the top of everyone's update list. It keeps you visible.
*

Put industry keywords in your status, because that's how recruiters will find you. I swear if my status said, "Kelly is slaying SQL Server dragons and writing complex queries," my profile would get views from all kinds of people in the database industry, and I would get contacted by recruiters.

* Say you are interviewing for jobs even if you have no interviews lined up.

Which brings me to...

LinkedIn Keywords
I'm not exactly sure how the LinkedIn search engine works, or how the paid part of the site works, but I will tell you that keywords are everything. If you are looking for wok in the IT industry you better have buzzwords in your profile and in your status. Use hot words like "whitelisting" and "positive IT tools."

LinkedIn Jobs Page
Linked in has a jobs page, and there were probably 25-45 jobs listed within 15 miles of my house at any given time. Not just job jobs, but great jobs. Many of the jobs actually give you the recruiter's name, so you can apply directly. Many of the jobs say "recommendations preferred," which is why I say get as many people to write
recommendations for you as possible. It really pays off.

Other Places to Find Work
Create a Profile on Monster.com
Create a profile on Monster.com, and sign up for the job alerts. Update your profile on a weekly basis, even if you only change one word, because it pops you to the top of the stack when employers are searching for people. You land in the "recently updated profiles" bucket.

Which leads me to...

Hang out a Shingle
Start a business on your own. My fallback skill has always been writing, so I hung out my shingle and started my own contract writing business. How did I get that first job? A friend on MySpace. Gary (Garibaldi) hired me to help him with an RFP. How did I get the second job? LinkedIn jobs board. I interviewed for a sales engineer position,
and I didn't get the job, but they did hire me as a contract writer for almost a year, which was much more lucrative.

Craigslist.com
Yes, craigslist! Not only are there many jobs posted there, it's also a great place to post your resume.

I posted a mini resume on craigslist and got three contract jobs in less than a week. There are hundreds of people looking for jobs on craigslist so the key is to differentiate yourself.

My headline was this:

The first line of my posting was something like, "Highly technical perfectionist with a Journalism degree, social skills and a sense of humor." Then I had 10 bullet points that listed what my skills were. You have to differentiate yourself or you will get lost in the rubble.

Register on Company Websites
Go directly to the companies you want to work for and use their online registration to post your resume. And sign up for their job alerts!

Get to Know Some Recruiters
Some companies still have inside recruiters, but more often than not companies will hire outside recruiters to fill positions. I had recruiters coming out of the woodwork when I posted on craigslist, and I called every one of them, and then chose ONE to work with. Not all recruiters are created equal. Choose one who will go to bat for you.

Get Someone to Hand-Walk Your Resume
Many jobs on company websites are in the final stages of interviewing before you even see them posted. The only way you're going to get an interview is to have an inside source who can tell you what jobs are going to be posted BEFORE they get posted. Have your insider walk your resume to the inside recruiter or the hiring manager's desk.

First Impressions Are Everything
When I had been doing all of the above for two years and I still hadn't been able to land a full-time job I had to ask myself why. Why did I always get down to the top two candidates and come in second? I finally decided to try something that even I didn't believe would work: I changed the color of my hair. Why? Because most people, whether they will admit it or not, have preconceived notions about blondes. They are perceived to be flaky, fun and dumb.

Wow, talk about an interesting holiday this year.
Maybe the most unconventional of years, this year. Simply different, that's all.
Snowstorms. Power outages. Marooned inside for days. Digging cars out of snowbanks. Soup. Fires. Beading.

I'd like to think material things aren't important to me. If you know me, I'm happy with a cup of coffee and my old standby Lucy pants and a sweatshirt.
As my girlfriends Martine and Carolyn, know all too well, I do LOVE my favorite Lucy pants. I could wear them every day and even have been known to sleep in them, and awake fully dressed and ready for a new adventure. They're black, stretchy, flattering and act as "super MacGyver pants" when locked in a dressing room with their super-agent resourceful ways.
But I digress.
Yes, back to Christmas, yes, it was an interesting year. Let's see, the usual was said..."Really I don't need anything" and "it's all about Jack" scenario. And as not to upset the norm, Santa abided and brought nothing, except for washcloths and Dove soap. Sounds like an Albertson's or Safeway run to me.

Budgets are understandable and reality, especially this year. It's not about things. In fact, mall gift cards from prior years have a way of piling up and getting forgotten by me. For me, it's all about experiences and art.

So that's why I met with my favorite photographer today and ordered these photos for the living room and boutique.
I worked all through the holiday, and so art is my reward.
